ABOUT OUR FILM

The Broken Diamond
There's No Dying in Baseball

The Michigan State University Fiction Filmmaking Capstone is the culmination of years of learning and prerequisites in the art of filmmaking, where students put forth their newfound expertise and create a thrilling thirty-minute short film from the ground up. Throughout this year-long program, students tackle each phase of the film life cycle from the writing of the script, principal photography, post-production, casting a wide range of actors, shooting, and directing, editing, marketing, and distributing to audiences at film festivals across the state and country. It is through this project, that students are able to gain experience and prepare themselves to enter the film industry as professionals and future Spartan graduates.

This year, our film, The Broken Diamond, tells the story of Rae, a janitor at a minor league baseball stadium, who discovers a beaten and bloodied man in a closet, while cleaning the stadium stands after a late game. When her fellow colleague, Anise, happens upon Rae, the two of them find themselves in a dark conspiracy rooted deep in the franchise and will do whatever it takes to save the team and the coworkers they have come to love.

Through this project, we were able to tell the story of not just the underdog team, but also be able to highlight the individuals that are often glanced over, but work hard behind the scenes. This film helps in offering the unglorified individuals of society an opportunity to step into the spotlight and save the day. Told in a funny yet emotional drama that emphasizes the themes of both redemption and friendship, this film was written, produced, and filmed by the very students who embarked on this project collectively this past September. The passion that we possess for this project, is not only the driving force behind making our ideas into a reality but also the same passion that our film's characters’ possess for the fictional baseball team the “Panthers,” which we have all come to love.
